Good Luck Rake 熊手

The other day, my dad brought back something like a bamboo hand.

I asked him what it was. He said that it was a rake and he got it at Asakusa Tori-no-Ichi market.

“The market opens on the days of Rooster in Chinese zodiac calender,” my mum said and went on: “Rake together dead leaves in the garden, in other words, rake in furtune like this,” she said and mimed with her hand.

“Hmmm, I don’t know about Rooster days, but it’s too small to gather leaves or fortune, Mum.”

“It’s a miniture of course, a sort of a good luck charm, you know,” she said with a smile.

“Mum, what’s this, hanging down? ”

“Ah, rice ears – abundant harvest!”

Oh, dear, in Japan, there are so many annual events, manners, customs and so on.

“Rake in good fortune for the coming year!” exclaimed my dad.

熊手

この間、ダディが竹の手のような物を持ち帰ってきた。何なのか聞いてみると、

浅草酉の市で買った「熊手」というものらしい。

「その市は干支の酉の日にオープンしてね、熊手で庭の枯葉を掻き集めたり、つまり、幸運を掻き集めたり、こうやって」

とマミーが手振りをしてみせた。

「う〜ん、酉の日とかよくわからないけれど、枯葉や幸運を集めるには小さすぎるよ」

「もちろん、これはミニチュアで、縁起物なのよ」

と笑顔でマミーは言う。

「マミー、これは何？ この下がっているやつ」

「ああ、これは稲穂 – 豊穣！」

ああ、日本には年中行事、しきたり、習慣などなど、いろいろあるものだなあ。

「幸運を掻き集めよう、2019年！」ダディが大声で言った。
